The first time I heard the "b" word was in ninth grade, when one of my precocious classmates declared, "bisexuality is so in fashion right now."

The second run-in I had with the word was a year later, when my friends from summer camp gossiped about a girl we knew who claimed to live a double life: she was a good girl by day but a rebellious bisexual punk by night.

In high school, I was a straight-A student, musician and dancer. I attended church and seldom went to parties. I rarely did anything rebellious and I almost never got in trouble with authority figures. That all changed when I was caught kissing a girl one day; I was almost kicked out of the music program I was attending, even though I was the concertmaster and had openly kissed a boy previously.

bisexual.gifThe 14th BECAUSE (Bisexual Empowerment Conference: A Uniting, Supportive Experience) is currently in its planning stages. This conference is to be held at the Minneapolis campus of the University of Minnesota on March 28-30, 2008. All workshops will be held on Saturday March 29th.

After thirteen consecutive years, from 1992 through 2004, and three years off, BECAUSE is coming back. The BECAUSE Conference is the premier weekend for bisexuals, queers, questioning, and all others who are neither one thing nor the other. BECAUSE attracts people from throughout the Midwest and beyond to attend various educational workshops, get active, and generally enjoy the community experience.

bimarriage.gifNational Gay and Lesbian Task Force Originally Printed 9/04

In the hundreds of stories written about 'gay marriage' in recent months, one group of people deeply affected by the issue has been left out: bisexuals. According to the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, this omission has not only made the record factually incomplete, but has helped contribute to an oversimplification of an emotional-laden and complex issue.

For example, when the Washington Post wrote about the first same-sex couple to marry in Massachusetts on May 17, 2004, its front-page headline read, "A Carefully Considered Rush to the Altar; Lesbian Pair Wed After 7 Years Together," referring to Robyn Ochs and Peg Preble, but the headline was wrong. One of the two, Robyn Ochs, is not only bisexual but a co-founder of the Bisexuality Resource Center and one of the nation's most prominent bisexual leaders for more than 20 years. Even though Ms. Ochs emphasized her orientation as a bisexual in speaking with the reporter, this was never mentioned, other than the article noting that she teaches about bisexuality at Tufts University.
