Activists Announce New Feingold for President Strategy
LGBT Community Plays Active Role in New Push
Senator Russell Feingold (D-WI), now serving in his third term, has established himself as a progressive and independent-minded statesman His staunch opposition to the Iraq War, passionate defense of civil liberties and commitment to clean government have made him a favorite of the Internet-savvy "netroots" of the Democratic Party. The Senator from Wisconsin has a strong record of support for the LGBT Community. Feingold supports full marriage equality for same sex couples, and spoke out against the Wisconsin ballot measure to ban civil unions and marriage for same sex couples. The Senator has also been active in the fight against HIV/AIDS at home and abroad. He currently co-chairs the Center for Strategic and International Studies' Task Force on HIV/AIDS. The LGBT Community has it's own online community page at Runrussrun.com, along with four other constituency groups (African Americans for Feingold, Latinos for Feingold, Labor for Feingold, and Young Democrats for Feingold). LGBT Advocate David Mariner serves on the steering community for the site. Mariner previously co-chaired 'Out for Dean', a grassroots network of LGBT supporters of Howard Dean. He and Wendy Howell currently co-moderate a Yahoo Group for LGBT Feingold supporters (www.feingoldequality.org). The effort to convince Senator Feingold to make a presidential run traces back to December, 2004 when the first Russ Feingold for President blog was started by current Washington University law student Daniel Kuehnert. Since then, the effort has grown to include 20 state blogs and numerous nationwide sites. Steering Committee member, Minnesota resident and political activist Joel Clemmer, says "The movement has grown tremendously and needs a new face for the final push. Senator Feingold has said he will decide whether to mount a campaign "after the November election." Runrussrun.com is not affiliated with Senator Feingold or the Progressive Patriots Fund.
