Tevin Campbell Returns to the Spotlight
Child Prodigy Joins Cast of Hairspray on Broadway

Before he even reached his eighteenth birthday, Tevin Campbell had worked with some of the best folks in the music industry, In 1989, at the age of 11, he was first featured on a Quincy Jones album. Soon after he recorded the single "Round and Round" written by Prince, which quickly went gold. Campbell went on to work with Chaka Khan, James Ingram, and even Ray Charles. His first album 'T.E.V.I.N.', went platinum and produced several R&B hits. Campbell had a charmed childhood,

As he entered adulthood, however, Tevin faced several challenges both professionally and personally. After several successful releases his 1999 album, 'Tevin Campbell', saw his lowest point in record sales. At this time Campbell was hanging with an evangelical Christian crowd, a community that was not welcoming to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people.

Campbell was involved in 'Jesus is the Answer' (JITA) Ministries. His circle included other young celebrities like Brandy Norwood and Lamont Bentley from the hit television show 'Moesha'; Todd Bridges from the show 'Different Strokes'; and Tyrone Burton from the television show 'The Parent Hood'..

In 1999 Tevin Campbell made a guest appearance on the telvision show 'Moesha', a show which just a few years earlier had been criticized by the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) for a homophobic episode.

It was in this climate that Tevin Campbell came to terms with his sexuality. Later that same year Campbell was arrested in Los Angeles for soliciting lewd acts from an undercover male police officer. To date, Campbell has avoided making any public statements about his sexuality.

After his arrest Tevin slipped below the national radar. His 'Best of' album was released in 2001, and in 2002 he toured Africa promoting the album.

Campbell joined the cast of Hairspray on Broadway in December of this year. Despite limited acting experience, he continues to have a succesful run playing the character Seaweed J. Stubbs.
