Saving Face
Alice Wu Tackles Cultural Taboos & the Power of Love in New Film

In her first feature movie, out director Alice Wu tackles the complexities of being a lesbian in a modern Chinese-American family. Saving face is a romantic comedy about a daughter struggling to understand her mother's heart, which ultimately allows her to understand her own. It is the story of unspoken loves, contemporary and cultural taboos, and the journey of two women towards living their lives honestly.

"My favorites stories arise from good-but-flawed characters trying desperately to do what each believes is best for a given situation -- and the situation keeps getting worse.", says Wu.

"The characters don't find any of this funny; we as the audience laugh out of recognition -- in their boat we might do (and perhaps have done) worse."

The film follows mother and daughter between their worlds in Flushing Queens, and Manhattan. For 28 year-old New Yorker Wil Pang (portrayed by Michelle Krusiec), life is a juggling act between a promising career as a surgeon and her responsibilities as a dutiful daughter. Like the #7 train she takes to visit her Chinese family each week, Wil is perpetually in transit between two worlds.

The expectations of the Flushing Queens society she is from and the desires that alienate her from it have made Wil content to live below the surface. The masquerade is comic even in its pain as Wil tolerates her mother's weekly set ups with eligible Chinese-American boys at the Friday Chinese socials; but it quickly becomes a farce when Maher mother's mask cracks first.

'Saving Face' opens in select cities in June.
